Screening with MRI finds breast cancers at an earlier stage than mammograms in women with a family history of the disease, but this benefit may come with the risk of more overdiagnosis and false-positive results, especially in women with dense breasts, according to a Dutch study. Magnetic resonance imaging MRI of the breast uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the structures within the breast. It is primarily used as a supplemental tool to breast screening with mammography or ultrasound. It may be used to screen women at high risk for breast cancer, evaluate the extent of cancer following diagnosis, or further evaluate abnormalities seen on mammography.
We aimed to evaluate the findings and results from breast magnetic resonance imaging MRI examinations performed for problem-solving purposes due to inconclusive conventional imaging findings. An adaptation of digital mammography could cut image acquisition times and provide a new screening method to patients unable to undergo breast MRI, but added time commitments could make the technique difficult to implement in clinical practice, a case study published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology suggests. Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography, or CESM, is a a subset of digital mammography that uses intravenous contrast to analyze breast cancer using a dual-energy technique, first author Jordana Phillips, MD, and colleagues at Harvard Medical School wrote. Screening technicians obtain both high- and low-energy images in this approach, with the former highlighting areas of contrast intake and the latter producing an image similar to conventional 2-D mammography.
